Many people who visit Thailand may have tried the famous Tom Yum Goong, a dish that Thais often recommend to tourists. As a Thai myself, I take great pride in this iconic dish. It's a soup that truly represents the essence of Thai cuisine. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend it!

So, today I'm going to share with you a simple recipe for Tom Yum Goong that you can easily make at home using ingredients you have on hand or by substituting with what's available. The key lies in the perfect balance of sourness, spiciness, and aromatic flavors, which are the hallmarks of this Thai dish.
"The soul of Tom Yum lies in the fresh and intense ingredients."

With these ingredients, you're poised to embark on a thrilling culinary journey into the heart of authentic Thai cuisine!

Main Ingredients

  • Shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • Water or chicken broth
  • Lemongrass (sliced)
  • Kaffir lime leaves (torn)
  • Galangal (sliced)
  • Thai chilies (crushed or sliced)
  • Mushrooms (straw mushrooms or oyster mushrooms)
  • Tomatoes (cut into wedges)
  • Lime juice
  • Fish sauce
  • Sugar (optional, to balance flavors)
  • Cilantro (chopped, for garnish)

Optional Ingredients for Creamy Version

  • Evaporated milk  or coconut milk
  • Thai chili paste (Nam Prik Pao)

Let's make some delicious Tom Yum Goong together! 1. Start by cleaning the shrimp. Cut along the back of the shrimp and remove the black vein, or prepare them however you prefer. I don't think it affects the taste that much. 2. Bring water to a boil and add lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, chili, and galangal. Let it boil until the water is infused with the flavors. 3. Add mushrooms and tomatoes. Once they're cooked, add in the shrimp. 4. Now it's time to season the soup. I recommend adjusting the flavors gradually to your liking. Add evaporated milk or coconut milk and roasted chili paste, followed by a little sugar for a well-rounded taste. 5. Add fish sauce and coriander. Finally, here's a pro tip: turn off the heat before adding lime juice. This will give your soup a wonderful lime aroma without any bitterness. Now you're ready to serve!
